James Dole, a young Massachusetts native, utilized his resources to go to Honolulu in 1899. He later acquired a 64-acre farm in Oahu’s central plains, where he tried numerous crops before settling on pineapple. Dole started advertising campaigns in magazines, invested in new technology to process the crops and received major financial support to buy additional farmland.
Due to the budding trans-Atlantic aircraft sector, he also started shipping pineapples across enormous distances. A little fruit stand was established in 1950, so everyone could enjoy the plantation’s delicious produce. Then, in 1989, a plantation-style residence was constructed to serve as a museum of James Dole’s efforts and welcome pineapple enthusiasts worldwide. Today, the Dole Plantation is one of the most popular attractions in Hawaii.
